Community Organisation:

The objective was mainly to form a strong people’s organisation so that they can undertake the activities in future to create community ownership among the people and it was also kept in mind to create a sense of voluntarism attitude among the target people.

Capacity building programme for the PRIs:

Due to lack of capacity of the PRI members and interest on the part of Government officials, PRI functionaries are not able to exercise their power to a great extend. This was the finding from the workshop on PRI, which was conducted in project locations of Keonjhar District. The participants of the workshop were the PRI functionaries, community leader and Govt. Officials which provided valuable opinions on effective functioning of Panchayats in the District as well in the state. The activities are done through the supported by DRC, cysd, Kendujhar.

Training and capacity building of women:

In our recent modern society women find little or no space to assert their rights. Their situation is also more vulnerable in the context of globalization. They always fail back in realizing the ultimate outcome of every socio-economic development initiatives under taken by different agencies. Apart from that there are number of taboos exists in the society which prevents them participate in every sphere of work and also they are not prioritized in compared to male counterparts, looking into this background the organisation has organised a mass community awareness programme on empowerment. Already formed 35 Self-help groups were invited into different phases. They got trained on the book keeping mechanism and they also got the knowledge on the vocational training. There were also subjects covering the marking of the available local products. This programme was conducted in the project locations of Keonjhar. The resource persons of the programme conveyed the message on the available entitlements for the women groups and how they can access those benefits without any sort of hurdles. Apart from this they were also oriented on the official procedure on getting those benefits. The outcome of the activity helped the women group to access the schemes implemented by different agencies.

Campaign on Environment Awareness:

There was also a general meeting with the tribal community where local resource persons delivered their views on the need for environment protection and how this will save our future generation in the context of growing industrialization. There were also representation of community level leaders, key persons such as teachers and other community members in the general meeting.

Agriculture programme:

For development of farmers the organisation have conducted farmers training, watershed, drip irrigation, farm management, Vermi composting, Organic farming etc. The organisation is always giving priority to encourage vegetable cultivation for more income Generation of farmers. Also the organisation promoted to the Farmers on SRI cultivation and it’s profit and loss. So that in 5 villages doing the SRI methods in last year.

Forest protection camp:

Sixty three persons both male and female form 15 villages participated in the discussion regarding community based forest management system and its effectiveness. Symbiotic relationship between forest and men especially the tribal people, forest and the livelihood of the tribal people, forest agriculture, forest and culture, forest and bio-diversity etc. this programme was facilitated by the local forester, forest guard and social activist. The main objective of this camp was to sensitize the village people to adopt community based forest management system and protect the forest through formation of VSS.

Education & Literacy development programme:

Our organisation has promoted a number of educational and literacy development programme during the year. Our organisation promoted literacy campaign drive in Sadar Block of Keonjhar district to check the drop out rate in schools motivating the parents, guardian to send their children regularly to school.

Networking:

A Network Based Approach on “Capitalizing Opportunity of Mainstreaming Resources to Impact Livelihoods and Linking Grassroots Governance for Adaptation to Climate Change in Eco-fragile Areas of Orissa”, Supported by UDYAM, Nayagarh, Orissa, SSJS being a partner of this network is starving for ensuring the enforcement of human rights and social justice in order to establish a exploitation free society. One staff has been deputed as fellow to this network, who organised the following works in the Sadar block of Keonjhar District.

  • Ensuring the Govt. Schemes
  • Specially facilitate to NREGS
  • Specially facilitate to Farm pond
  • Awareness builds to climate change
  • Aware to the school children about climate change
  • Awareness building on Rural Health.

Case Study

Similisahi (Hamlet) of Baradapal village of Baradapal GP under Sadar Block is tribal populated village. Bhuyan, patra and Kolha community are the major residents of the village; total 35 nos. households and 182 populations reside in the village. The village is situated 16 kms. away from the district head quarter. The people chiefly depend on agriculture and forest produces. Agriculture is primarily undertaken depending on rainwater in the absence of any irrigation facilities.
There are 3 nos. of ponds and 5 nos. of tube wells available, which meet the domestic and drinking water needs of the villager. But, the tragedy starts from the month of March when the ponds and tube wells dried up, by which the villagers depend on Dumkanasa stream that located 1.00 km. away from the village for their both domestic and drinking water purposes. The water of the stream is turned dirty in summer. The villagers out of compulsion, they use that water and fall in different kind of diseases.
The villagers took decision in a village meeting facilitated by the cadres of network organization i.e. SSJS and wrote an application to the Sarapanch of Baladapal and Gram Panchayat took initiative to dig a new pond. So that it was approved by level to level and started the work under NREGS. In the villagers of Similisahi worked here who have job card and applied to work. After some days worked the payment made delay by various level. So that one day the job card holder come to GP for start Dharana. In this time some people protect them so that they are  lucked the GP when the Sarpanch and other line department come and compromise. After compromise they stop the Dharana and within 3 days take payment.
